Nuclear Power Corporation of India's (NPCIL)
Executive Director, Mr. S K Agarwal on 20 December 2005 said that pre-project
activity has started with regard to six new projects, including four Light Water
Reactors (LWR) units. These units include
- Two units at Jaitapur in Maharashtra with 1,000
MW capacity each based on LWR
- Two
units at Koodankulam in Tamil Nadu with 1,000 MW capacity each is to be set
up based on LWR
- Two heavy
water units at Kakrapara in Gujarat each with 700 MW capacity.
But their capacity and technology will be
finalised only on the basis of negotiations with the international nuclear
suppliers group.
On the pre-project activities relating to the new
two units at Koodankulam, though site clearance has been obtained, the company
has to get environmental clearance from the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.
The Koodankulam project's first and second units
will start generating power by 2007 and 2008 respectively. The overall civil
works in the first unit is over and in the case of the second unit, the works is
nearing completion and company is in the process of equipment erection.
