On 24 December 2006, Prime Minister of
India, Dr. Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for Burnpur-based
IISCO Steel Plant's modernisation and expansion programme. The project will
entail an investment of Rs.9,592 crore.
The major facilities to be installed
under the modernisation package includes a 7 mmetre tall coke oven battery, two
sinter machines, new blast furnace, three 150 tonne convertors, two 6 strand
billet casters and one four strand beam blank/bloom caster. A new universal
section mill of 0.6 million tpa capacity and a new wire rod and a bar mill of
1.2 million tpa capacity will also be included in the expansion programme.
The expansion project is an integral
part of SAIL's growth plan to produce 23 million tpa of hot metal by 2010. At
present, ISP's capacity stands at 4.26 lakh tpa of saleable steel, mainly
structurals and bars and rods and also produces 2.54 lakh tpa pig iron.
