The Railway Ministry is planning to
convert the 248 km Ahmedabad-Udaipur meter gauge into broad gauge under the
unigauge programme. The project is estimated to cost about Rs.750 crore.
It is also having a proposal to link
the world-famous Ambaji temple in Banaskantha district in North Gujarat either
with Khedbrahma or via Palanpur under the 'connectivity to religious places'
scheme. The Railways is also planning to connect all major and minor ports in
Gujarat with the nearest railway terminals under the 'port connectivity'
programme so as to provide a boost to freight movement.
At present Udaipur, is connected with
Delhi by broad gauge services and therefore, the railways are planning to
connect Udaipur with Ahmedabad. The Gujarat government has shown its keen
interest to provide rail connectivity to religious places and ports.
