Union Steel Chemicals and Fertiliser Minister Mr Ram Vilas Paswan laid the
foundation stone on 16 February 2009 for Steel Authority of India's (SAIL) Steel Processing Units (SPU)
at village Behjam, in Lakhimpur Kheri district of Uttar Pradesh.
The SPU will be set up at an investment cost of Rs 100 crore. The new plant
which requires 25 acre is scheduled to be ready in 18 months. The plant will
have an installed capacity of 1 lakh tonne per annum and will produce TMT bars
from input material sourced from SAIL's integrated steel plants.
SAIL has decided to set up 11 steel processing units in 7 states where it does
not have any production facility, the foundation stones of which have been laid
at Betiah, Mahnar and Gaya in Bihar; Gwalior, Ujjain and Hoshangabad in Madhya
Pradesh and Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir.
