Gujarat is all set to get mega nuclear power project with 8,000 MW generation
capacity. The power project is likely to attract investment to the tune of Rs
80,000 crore.
The site location committee, appointed by the Union Government's Nuclear
Power Corporation of India has reportedly identified 1,000 acre site at
Mithivirdi in Bhavnagar for the proposed power project. A total of six sites,
including one each in Ahmedabad and Junagadh and some others in Bhavnagar
itself, were identified and short-listed by the committee.
The power plants will use nuclear reactors to be purchased from the United
States under the nuclear deal signed by the Union Government. According to
experts, a coastal site is ideal from the safety point of view for setting up a
mega nuclear power project. The area is barren and there is practically no
human-induced activity.
The state government has sought 40 per cent of the power generated from these
plants for Gujarat.
