The proposed Rs 8,000-crore coal gasification project cum fertiliser plant at
Talcher may start only after the ailing Fertilizer Corporation of India is
brought out of the purview of the Board for Industrial and Financial
Reconstruction.
The project has been planned by a consortium of three companies- CIL, GAIL
and Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers at the closed Talcher unit of FCI which
is currently under BIFR. Each of the three companies will have an equal stake in
the project.
The techno-economic feasibility study on this project is underway.
The consortium has identified a coal block at Talcher Coalfields under the
command area of Mahanadi Coalfields for this surface-based coal gasification
project. The block has a capacity of 5.5 million tpa and once washed, it will
yield 3.7 million tonne.
