General Motors India (GM) has earmarked about $50 million (approx Rs 220
crore) to upgrade existing facility at Halol in Gujarat for manufacturing the
new range of products.
GM with its JV partner Hong Kong based Shanghai Automotive Industry
Corporation (SAIC) plans to manufacture light commercial vehicles (LCV) from
Halol plant. The LCVs are likely to be rolled out in India by 2011.
Apart from LCVs, the JV is likely to roll out passenger cars for the Indian
market by 2012. The cars will be produced at GM's Talegaon plant near Pune in
Maharshtra.
Though the passenger cars manufactured by GM India with SAIC are expected to
be rolled out under the brand name of Chevrolet, the JV firm is yet to decide on
the name for its LCVs.
