The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is not keen on handing over the modernised Chennai and Kolkata airports to private companies.
In early 2012, the Planning Commission had suggested that the two airports be given to the private sector for their running as the decision making process in AAI was slow. Also, it had proposed that Chennai and Kolkata airports be given to the private sector on a PPP basis.
However, the AAI is not in favour of handing over the modernised Chennai and Kolkata airports to the private sector because these are its two of the largest revenue earning airports. Further, the AAI has pointed out that the Tamil Nadu and West Bengal Governments are not likely to give their approval for privatisation proposal.
