The Adani Group has outlined over 310 projects worth Rs 17,500 crore to significantly expand the capacity of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai by March 2029. The goal is to increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 6.5 crore passengers (CPA). Major developments include rebuilding Terminal 1 at a cost of Rs 3,130 crore by September 2028, expanding Terminal 2 from four CPA to 4.5 CPA for Rs 142 crore by March 2027, and constructing a new air traffic control technical block costing Rs 185 crore.
Additional upgrades will boost hourly flight handling capacity to over 52 movements. MIAL has also proposed extending Taxiway M to connect with runway 27, including a bridge over the Mithi river, designed to accommodate Code F aircraft like Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380.
Currently, CSMIA handles up to 44 flights per hour during high-intensity runway operations (HIRO) and 42 flights during non-HIRO periods. The airport reached a record 5.5 crore passengers in 2024. With the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, the combined capacity for the region is expected to reach 11.5 CPA by 2029-30.
