The proposed international airport project at Navi Mumbai has faced a major
set back as the EIA report prepared by IIT Bombay has declared the two
alternative locations for the airport as unviable.
The EIA considered alternative sites at Mahapan in Sindhudurg and
Rewas-Mandwa in Raigad district for the project. The Mahapan site was unviable
as it is approximately 350 km away from the city and will take about 10 hours to
reach by road. Rewas-Mandwa, being closer to Mumbai, was also analysed, but it
did not have the necessary support infrastructure for an airport.
The original 2,000-ha site under consideration at Panvel is not yet cleared
as it requires removal of mangroves from 161 ha and changing the course of two
local rivers.
