Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced plans to transform the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) into one of the largest healthcare facilities in India.
As part of the initiative, significant infrastructure improvements are being made, including the construction of the Mother and Child Care Hospital, which will provide specialised pediatric care. This new hospital, set to house 800 beds, is expected to offer treatment and will be part of a broader plan to completely restructure GMCH.
The Chief Minister reviewed the progress of two major healthcare projects in Guwahati - Pragjyotish Medical College and Hospital and Mother and Child Care Hospital. The Pragjyotishpur Medical College, the city's second medical college, is already offering limited outpatient services.
The medical college, which is expected to be fully operational by August 15 this year, will have 600 beds and will enroll 100 MBBS students annually. Plans are also in place to expand the medical college with an additional 500-bed building in the future.
The new Mother and Child Care Hospital is part of GMCH’s ongoing redevelopment. Expected to be completed by October, it will feature super-speciality services such as neurology, cardiology, and kidney transplant, and will take over the GMCH Principal’s office. The project, valued at 800 beds, will also shift existing specialised services to its state-of-the-art facilities, significantly enhancing GMCH’s capacity to provide advanced medical care.
