The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invited expression of interest (EoI) from reputed public companies, charitable trusts, or societies to develop and maintain a textile museum at the India United Mill No. 2 & 3 site in Byculla (East). The proposed museum will be located on a 44,000 sq. mtrs. plot (CS No. 831 of Mazgaon Division) at Kalachowky.
The selected entity will be responsible for the development, operation, and 20-year maintenance of the museum without any financial assistance from the BMC. The civic body estimates that the project will require an investment of Rs 80 crore to Rs 100 crore, and has positioned the initiative as a CSR-driven or privately funded heritage conservation project.
The BMC had acquired the mill premises in 2009 with the intent to preserve and celebrate Mumbai’s textile heritage. Apart from the museum, the plan includes recreational facilities like a musical fountain, murals, and an amphitheatre.
The submission deadline is set for July 28 at the BMC main office in Fort.
