The Bhilai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched construction of a modern 150 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) near Kachandur village, aiming to significantly improve the city’s water quality and environment.
BMC Commissioner Rajeev Kumar Pandey inspected the site as work began on the sludge treatment facility. The new STP will scientifically treat wastewater flowing through the Kosa Nala and Telha Nala, two major drains that currently contribute to water pollution. By treating this sewage, the project will reduce contamination of local water bodies while enabling the reuse of treated water for irrigation and other non-potable purposes. Highlighting its importance, officials noted that “this initiative marks a significant step towards cleaning the city’s major water bodies and providing a cleaner environment to its citizens.”
The plant, sanctioned at a cost of Rs 145 crore with an additional Rs 44.55 crore for 15 years of operations and maintenace (O&M), is scheduled for completion within 24 months. The project promises improved hygiene, environmental protection, and a cleaner identity for Bhilai and surrounding areas.
