The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is spearheading the development of a civil enclave at Bihta airbase, poised to become Patna’s second airport and a major aviation hub for Bihar, which will improve connectivity. The project, set for completion by 31 March, 2027, aims to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft like Boeing 777s and 747s.
AI has proposed acquiring 191 additional acres to extend the current 8,200-ft. runway to 12,000 feet, enabling long-haul international operations. A Rs 459-crore contract has been awarded to an India-Russian JV for constructing a three-storey terminal, with Rs 438 crore allocated to the terminal and Rs 21 crore for operations and maintenance. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 1,413 crore, covering the terminal, taxiway, apron, utility complex, multi-level parking, link roads, and a residential colony.
The terminal will span 68,000 sqm with 64 check-in counters, five boarding bridges, 10 gates, and six baggage belts. Designed to blend modernity with Buddhist architecture, it will feature VIP lounges, energy-efficient systems, and advanced security. The apron will hold 10 Code C aircraft bays and a 600-mtrs. taxiway. Bihta will share ATC and fire services with the Indian Air Force.
