The Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project reached a significant milestone with the completion of its second mountain tunnel in Palghar district, Maharashtra.
Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the successful breakthrough of the 454-mtrs.-long Mountain Tunnel-6 (MT-6), marking steady progress on India’s first high-speed rail corridor. The tunnel, which is 14.4 mtrs. wide and designed to accommodate both up and down tracks, was excavated using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM), a technique well-suited for challenging geological conditions. The project team completed the excavation in just 12 months.
Minister Vaishnaw praised the work pace, saying it has "instilled new confidence in the country," and highlighted that advanced construction technologies used on-site are attracting global attention. He also emphasized the domestic production of heavy machines and technologies. The Gujarat section of the bullet train corridor is expected to begin operations next year, with the full Mumbai connection set to be completed by 2029.
