The Centre has given its nod to the West Bengal government's proposal to set up an AIIMS-like institution at Kalyani's Basantapur, in Nadia district.
The land suggested by the state government for the institution similar to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences’ institution in Kalyani, 50 kms off Kolkata, received approval from the Union Health ministry. In the next financial year, the preliminary work such as laying of the boundary wall, levelling of land, including landfill, power and water supply will commence.
A 150 acre of land has been identified for the project and is estimated to cost above Rs 800 crore. However, the detailed project report (DPR) has not yet been prepared. It is projected to be completed in five years and some of the operations will be started within three years.
During the presentation of the budget for 2014-15, the Union Finance Minster, Arun Jaitley, had announced four projects, and the Kalyani project was one of them.
