The Union government has set a target of 10,000 km of National Highway construction for FY 2025-26, after completing 10,660 km in 2024-25.
In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari clarified that no separate records are maintained on accidents caused by poor road design or structural flaws. Even as fatalities remain a concern, the government is prioritizing technology-driven solutions.
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and advanced traffic management systems (ATMS) are being deployed in phases to improve monitoring and safety. ATMS, already active on major corridors like the Delhi– Meerut Expressway and Delhi–Mumbai Expressway, employs electronic enforcement to detect incidents in real time and ensure swift response.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated five pilot ATMS projects, with installations completed on the Bangalore–Mysore highway and Dwarka Expressway, while three others remain under progress.
