The Union Ministry of Ports and Shipping has expressed strong support for the comprehensive development of Kollam Port under the Sagarmala initiative, even though it is not classified as a major port.
Development authority remains with the Kerala government, but the Centre has committed to providing financial and technical assistance. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, in a Lok Sabha response, highlighted the need for Kollam Port to be upgraded to handle passenger, cargo, and luxury ships, and to establish a shipping route to Minicoy Island in Lakshadweep. He noted that some multipurpose development work at the port has already been completed with Central assistance.
MP N.K. Premachandran emphasised the importance of submitting a detailed development proposal through the State Maritime Board, aligning with Sagarmala guidelines, to unlock the port's potential. The Centre has also requested the state to propose necessary infrastructure enhancements to include Kollam Port in the Sagarmala framework for expanded connectivity and economic growth.
