In a significant move post the suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, the Centre has prioritised the acceleration of irrigation and power projects across the Indus River Basin. This includes tapping into additional water resources from the western rivers—Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab, for the benefit of Jammu & Kashmir and adjacent states.
The decision was finalised in an inter-ministerial meeting held on 20 May, 2025 involving key ministries—Home Affairs, External Affairs, Power, and Jal Shakti. The strategic focus is to expedite projects in a time-bound manner by enhancing financial and administrative support through an “all hands on deck” approach.
The renewed emphasis aligns with India’s broader aim to maximise its legally permissible use of the western river waters under the treaty framework. The Centre's plan aims to boost agricultural productivity and energy self-sufficiency in the region, while also asserting strategic and developmental control over key water resources.
