The proposed project of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj memorial in the Arabian Sea will have to start from scratch as the Canada-based NORR Group has backed out of the project due to miscommunication with its Indian counterpart.
NORR Group, who have designed Dubai’s Burj Khalifa was chosen as consultant by the state government to erect a 190-metre high statue of Shivaji in the Arabian Sea, 5 km off from Marine Drive. NORR had won the contract quoting Rs 44 crore but later reportedly demanded Rs 30 crore of additional amount from the state government. The state government has now decided to float a new tender for executing the project.
The government plans to develop the project on seven acres of land and to give the entire island a fort like look of medieval times. Facilities like library, food court and a theme park will also be there. The estimated cost of this project is Rs 2,000 crore and the budgetary provision of the state for this project is Rs 90 crore.
