Chemplast Sanmar, a flagship company
of Sanmar Group plans to set up a coal-based captive power plant and the
conversion of its mercury based caustic soda manufacturing process to a membrane based process at
Mettur in Tamil Nadu. The total project cost is estimated to be Rs.300 crore.
On 21 February 2006, the company board approved
an investment of Rs.220 crore for the power unit and Rs.80
crore for the conversion project.
The proposed power plant will
substitute the existing low sulphur heavy stock (LSHS)-based power plant at
Mettur. The membrane-based process will be cleaner and will help reduce power
consumption.
