Chennai residents across multiple zones are set to benefit from an expanded water supply as the second pipeline from the Chembarambakkam treatment plant undergoes trial runs.
The Rs 66.78-crore project will allow Chennai Metrowater to increase the supply from 265 million litres a day (MLD) to 530 MLD, reaching the plant’s full capacity. Municipal Administration Minister KN Nehru inspected the work on 20 August, 2025 ahead of its imminent inauguration. According to a press release, the enhanced supply will cover areas including Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Adyar, and Alandur within Greater Chennai Corporation, alongside Tambaram Corporation, Kundrathur, and Sriperumbudur municipalities.
The new pipeline stretches 11.7 km from Chembarambakkam to Porur, with an additional 9.2 km section extending from the Poonamallee Bypass Road junction to Koyambedu. Initiated in 2013, the project faced challenges such as laying pipes six ft. underground. Minorities Welfare Minister SM Nasar, Poonamallee MLA A. Krishnaswamy, local elected representatives, and senior officials attended the inspection, signalling swift progress toward enhanced urban water distribution.
