Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd (Cidco) has submitted a techno-economic
feasibility study on the proposed international airport at Navi Mumbai, to the
Maharashtra state government.
According to the study, the Navi Mumbai site would be
ideal for the project due to the availability of infrastructure, minimum
rehabilitation and resettlement problems, strong linkages between Mumbai and
Navi Mumbai and availability of more than 50 per cent of the required land with
Cidco.
The study also states that the Mumbai airport would
reach saturation level in terms of domestic passengers by 2005-06 and
international passengers by 2010-11. Further, ground access to the existing
domestic and international airports at Santacruz and Sahar, respectively, would
become increasingly difficult, especially during rush hours due to the
increasing congestion on the Andheri-Kurla road and the Western Express
Highway.
The study is expected to be forwarded to the Central
government for approval.
