Container Corporation of India
(Concor) proposes to set up a port side container terminal (PSCT) in West
Bengal to handle the projected increase in domestic container traffic. The
location for the terminal was not yet finalized but could be in Hoogly. This
would be the company’s third PSCT in the state. Both the other PSCTs are at
Calcutta, one at Cossipore under the Eastern Railway and the other at Shalimar
under the South-Eastern Railway. Of these two PSCTs, the one at Cossipore would
be used as a full-fledged inland container depot (ICD) to handle imports and
exports. This conversion of Cossipore PSCT into an ICD and the projected
increase in container traffic has prompted Concor to think in terms of a new terminal.
Concor was also setting up ICDs at Jamshedpur in Bihar and
Balasore in Orissa, which were expected to improve the throughput
significantly.
