Technology company Continental has inaugurated its new plant in Gurugram, together with its joint venture (JV) partner Nisshinbo Holdings, which will increase localization content. The new JV plant will produce valve blocks for Continental’s electronic brake systems (EBS) in India. Nisshinbo will provide machining for producing the valve blocks, which will later get assembled into a complete unit at the plant.
Till date, Continental has produced 7.3 million EBS units in India, including Electronic Stability Control (ESC) for passenger cars and Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS) required for passenger cars and two-wheelers. Continental pioneered the technology with a manufacturing range including products such as MK120 ESC for the passenger car market, the one-channel MK100 MAB and MiniMAB, and three-channel MK 3-2 MAB for the two-wheeler market in these segments.
Driven by the safety priorities led by safety legislation in India, the move is in line with the company's strategy of ‘in the market, for the market’, along with 'Vision Zero', which envisages a world without traffic accidents ensuring safe mobility.
Continental has extensive expertise in the areas of mechanical systems, vehicle and system architecture and integration, while the Nisshinbo Group is engaged in electronics, automobile brakes, chemicals, textiles, and real estate business with Mobility, Infrastructure and Safety, and Life and Healthcare as its strategic business domains.
The tier-one automotive supplier and tyre manufacturer operates seven plants which cater to the Indian market and a technical centre that supports Continental's global R&D activities. The JV was announced in 2022, with Continental holding 40 percent and Nisshinbo 60 percent of the shares.
