Coromandel Chemicals, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Coromandel International, has signed definitive agreements with Sakarni Plaster to form a joint venture focused on manufacturing and selling Phospho Gypsum-based green building materials.
This partnership marks a significant strategic diversification for Coromandel, enabling it to extend beyond its core agri-inputs business into the sustainable construction materials space. The joint venture aims to harness synergies in manufacturing and distribution, bringing together Coromandel’s industrial capabilities and Sakarni’s market leadership in the gypsum plaster sector.
The collaboration also supports the Government of India’s circular economy and sustainability goals, making it the country’s first large-scale initiative to produce eco-friendly gypsum building products using Phospho Gypsum - a by-product of fertiliser production, thereby eliminating the need for mining natural gypsum. The new manufacturing facility will be located in Visakhapatnam, adjacent to Coromandel’s existing fertiliser plant, ensuring continuous and cost-effective availability of Phospho Gypsum.
The venture is also expected to contribute to the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission by promoting domestic manufacturing, reducing import dependency, and reinforcing responsible waste utilisation. The rising demand for durable, eco-conscious, and affordable building materials, coupled with the booming construction sector, positions this initiative to make a significant impact in the Indian market.
