The Delhi government plans to install solar panels over the Munak Canal in a move to reduce water loss, generate clean electricity, and improve safety and cleanliness along the canal.
The initiative, currently in its planning and feasibility assessment phase, was announced following a site inspection by Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma and senior officials. A senior official stated that a comprehensive plan is being developed to cover the Delhi stretch of the Munak Canal by constructing four-foot-high walls on either side, over which solar panels will be mounted.
“The Munak Canal is a lifeline for Delhi's water supply. But in its current form, it is also a major source of loss, pollution and risk. Our plan to cover it with solar panels will help us save water, produce clean power, and make the canal safer and more secure for the people of Delhi,” Minister Verma said. The detailed project report (DPR) and technical design are expected to be finalised in the coming months.
