Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is moving forward with plans to set up a sixth waste-to-energy (WtE) plant at Ghazipur in east Delhi. This development follows closely after the MCD received environmental clearance (EC) for a 3,000-tonne-per-day (TPD) WtE plant at Narela.
According to senior municipal officials, bids have been invited as of 09 July to set up the new 2,000 TPD plant at Ghazipur. An agency will be engaged to reclaim approx. 15 acres of the Ghazipur landfill for the project.
Currently, Delhi generates large volumes of waste daily, with about 8,100 tonne processed at four WtE plants, while an additional 4,360 tonne still end up at the oversaturated Bhalswa and Ghazipur landfills. "Two new plants are being set up to fill this gap and cater to future waste generation. The 3,000 TPD Narela facility has been granted environmental nod and a second plant will be set up at Ghazipur with 2,000 TPD capacity," said a senior MCD official.
Delhi currently operates WtE plants at Bawana, Tehkhand, Okhla and Ghazipur.
