The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has advanced the deadline for complete biomining of legacy waste and land reclamation at the Okhla, Bhalswa, and Ghazipur landfills from December 2028 to December 2026.
The announcement followed a high-level review meeting on solid waste management chaired by CM Rekha Gupta, Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar, and other officials. Biomining operations were intensified under Phase II, raising daily waste processing from 25,000 tonne to 30,000 tonne as of July 2025. Since December 2024, a new agency at Bhalswa processed 15.3 lakh tonne of waste, aiming to complete 45 lakh MT within 12–14 months, instead of the initially planned 18 months.
At Okhla, MCD processed 10.5 lakh MT since 18 December, 2024, while four lakh MT was processed at Ghazipur starting in April 2025. Both sites target completing biomining ahead of schedule. MCD will appoint separate agencies for each landfill under Phase III, with no fixed quantity limits, ensuring all remaining waste is processed swiftly. The tender process will begin by end of July.
