The demand for the construction of the Kupti project on the Kadam River has gained momentum after Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy recently inaugurated the Sadarmat and Nirmal barrages in Adilabad and Nirmal districts.
The state government believes the Kupti project, which aims to ensure year-round water flow to the Kuntala waterfall — a major tourist destination, will be vital for the region. The previous BRS government had granted administrative sanction for the project’s execution through a Government Order (GO). However, Adilabad District Congress President Naresh Jadhav and Boath MLA Anil Jadhav have urged the Chief Minister to expedite the project, which plans to store 5.20 TMC of water to supplement the Kadam Reservoir. The initial proposal was for a Rs 870 crore investment.
Despite the state’s allocation of funds, villagers of Kupti village in Neredigonda mandal protested in August 2024, demanding proper discussions on rehabilitation and resettlement before proceeding with land acquisition. They have called for modifications to the earlier GOs to ensure their agricultural lands are protected.
