Diu has achieved a historic milestone by becoming India’s first district to meet its entire power demand through solar energy, with an installed capacity of 11.88 MW.
Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi praised Diu as a national exemplar in renewable energy adoption during his visit on 29 May, 2025. He highlighted that the district now meets its entire daytime electricity needs using solar power, significantly reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.
The Minister chaired a high-level review meeting with Union Territory officials to assess solar generation, supply frameworks, and future expansion plans. He noted that the capital investments made in the region’s solar infrastructure over the last decade have already been recouped through efficient solar power supply and sales, and emphasised the need for accelerated implementation of the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana to achieve household-level solar power saturation and maximise the scheme's benefits for local residents.
