The Durgapur Projects (DPL) is set for revival as the West Bengal government plans to add a new 660 MW unit—Unit No. 9, to its thermal power plant.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier announced an Rs 800 crore investment to rejuvenate the factory, of which Rs 400 crore has already been spent. The new unit will significantly boost power generation and create new employment opportunities for the local youth and previously transferred employees. The CM recently reviewed the project with Cabinet Ministers Arup Biswas, Malay Ghatak, and Pradeep Majumdar.
Established in 1961 under Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, DPL had seen a decline during later regimes despite efforts at revival. Currently, Units 7 and 8 generate 600 MW and 650 MW respectively, with the new addition expected to strengthen DPL’s turnaround.
