JSW Energy has announced a significant capacity expansion in West Bengal, as it has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for a 1,600 MW (2x800 MW) super/ultra-super critical thermal power plant at Salboni.
The company’s total generation capacity now stands at 32.1 GW, with 13.3 GW operational and 14 GW under construction. This agreement with the West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company marks the second PPA with the state, following a similar deal for another 1,600 MW in March 2025. The new plant will be commissioned within six years and will use domestic coal under the state's policy. The expansion effectively doubles the capacity of the Salboni site to 3,200 MW, making it the company’s largest single-location asset.
Sharad Mahendra, Joint MD and CEO, highlighted the plant’s strategic proximity to coal blocks and its operational synergies. The expansion brings JSW Energy’s thermal capacity to 10,658 MW.
