Ford Motor is working on a plan to re-enter the Indian market with a focus on hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs). The company may use its manufacturing facility in Chennai for these cars. As part of building its presence in India, Ford Motor may be keen to collaborate with a local manufacturing partner.
However, the auto major is firm on going ahead with its renewed plans. The logistical advantages and port proximity, Ford is planning to utilise its local facility in Maraimalar Nagar, Chennai as a export hub for the Asia Pacific (APAC) region.
In September 2021, Ford halted operations in India citing reasons of unviable operations. After that, while there were talks of coming back to India, plans were scrapped because of unfeasible market conditions, particularly for EVs.
