On 20 June 2008, Chief Minister of
Karnataka, Mr B S Yeddyurappa laid the foundation stone for the Shimoga airport
at Sogane village.
The airport to be constructed by
consortium of Hyderabad based Maytas Infra and NCC Infrastructure Holdings, will
entail an investment of Rs.110 crore. A separate special purpose company has
also been set up for the execution of the project where the consortium partners
Maytas Infra, NCC and VIE will have a shareholding pattern of 37 per cent, 37
per cent and 26 per cent respectively.
In the first phase of the project, the
airport will provide facilities for ATR-72 type aircrafts with a runway length
of 1,500 m. The second phase will provide facilities for A-320 type aircrafts
with a runway length of 3,100 m.
The construction period of the project
is 24 months from the date of signing the agreement, with a concession period of
30 years extendable by an additional 30 years term.
