Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T R Baalu, laid the
foundation stone for the proposed Rs.1,407 crore
container terminal at the Ennore Port near Chennai on 28 February.
The terminal will have a continuous quay length of 1,000 mtrs and longside
depth of 16 mtrs with a capacity to handle 1.5 million TEUs. The terminal will
be developed on BOT basis through PPP model with 30 years concession period. On
completion it will be able to handle three mainline vessels simultaneously.
The minster also laid the foundation stone for the Rs.312 crore second
container terminal of Tuticorin port on 01 March 2009.
