Telangana is set to enhance its air connectivity with four new airports proposed in Peddapalli, Mahbubnagar, Nizamabad, and Kothagudem.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has begun a pre-feasibility study for a greenfield airport in Anthergaon, Peddapalli, with the state government allocating Rs one crore for the study. The Indian Air Force (IAF) has approved the Peddapalli site, and plans include acquiring 950 acres for dual-use by passenger and IAF aircraft. Terminals and separate air traffic control systems will be built to handle both types of operations, and the airport will accommodate Airbus A320 aircraft.
Meanwhile, the Kothagudem airport plan is delayed as the identified land was deemed unsuitable. The District Collector is now scouting alternative locations. Airports in Mahbubnagar and Nizamabad will be developed as domestic airports to improve connectivity to neighbouring states and boost regional trade. Inspired by the success of the Kadapa airport in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana aims to stimulate local economic growth through air connectivity and future air cargo operations.
