The Uttar Pradesh government is in advanced discussions with Foxconn, Apple’s largest contract manufacturer, to set up a major mobile phone production facility in Greater Noida.
If finalised, this will be Foxconn’s first significant manufacturing presence in North India and marks a strategic expansion of Apple’s supply chain footprint in the country. Government officials and Foxconn representatives have already conducted two rounds of meetings in Delhi and Lucknow. The proposed plant, expected to span 300 acres, would be separate from Foxconn’s existing 50-acre outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) joint venture with HCL in the same region.
The Noida-Greater Noida belt currently accounts for nearly 50 percent of India’s mobile phone exports, making it a favourable location for such a major project. The new manufacturing facility is projected to create around 40,000 employment opportunities, and plans include residential accommodation for the workforce within the complex. This move aligns with the broader efforts by Apple and Foxconn to diversify their supply chain beyond China, especially in light of ongoing geopolitical tensions and trade challenges.
Foxconn’s Greater Noida project could potentially surpass the scale of its Bengaluru facility, which is set to become its second-largest globally. Meanwhile, Foxconn is also investing USD 37.2 million to acquire a 40 percent stake in its semiconductor JV with HCL, currently awaiting Cabinet approval.
