Gas Authority of India (GAIL) has completed almost 80 percent work on the natural gas pipeline running along the Samruddhi Mahamarg connecting Mumbai to Nagpur.
The pipeline has been laid over 530 km out of more than 680 km to be covered under the project.
The project which will enable the flow of gas to central India started in August 2021. To expedite the work, the forest clearance has been secured recently for and work has commenced. Moreover, the technical issues that had arisen with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) which is building the Samruddhi Mahamarg is being sorted out.
Once the pipeline is ready, Nagpur is expected to get piped gas supply through a city gas distributor in a year. Haryana City Gas has secured the contract for supply in Nagpur and is pursuing talks with GAIL India to secure the gas supply. It has initiated the process for approvals for laying its network in the city too.
The current pipeline will finally connect Mumbai to Jharsuguda in Odisha, with Nagpur in between. GAIL has also received the go-ahead to lay the pipeline from Nagpur to Jharsuguda phase.
