GMR Hyderabad International Airport (GHIAL) has announced a massive capital expenditure plan of nearly Rs 14,000 crore to be executed by 2030–31 (FY31) for a major expansion of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad. The move aims to transform the airport into a future-ready aviation hub capable of accommodating surging passenger and cargo demand.
The comprehensive expansion plan includes increasing the capacity of the existing terminal, building a new terminal, and constructing a second runway. Additional upgrades will focus on enhancing road connectivity and integrating metro access to improve overall accessibility. The project will also scale up cargo handling facilities and parking infrastructure to meet long-term growth projections. Hyderabad airport, currently ranked as India’s fourth largest, has seen remarkable growth in recent years.
Passenger traffic rose from 18.3 million in FY18 to 29.5 million, highlighting the need for expanded capacity. GHIAL's strategic investment will enable RGIA to efficiently manage future demand and strengthen its role as a critical node in both domestic and international aviation and trade networks. The expansion is expected to bolster regional economic development and elevate passenger experience.
