The Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) has recommended revising the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the Polavaram Project due to Andhra Pradesh's plan to divert an additional 200 tmc ft of water through the proposed Polavaram-Banakacherla Link Project (PBLP).
The GRMB emphasised that this change alters the project’s original scope and must be approved again by the Advisory Committee of the Department of Water Resources, which had cleared the DPR in January 2009. “The diversion of 2 tmc ft of water per day from the Polavaram dam may lead to modifications in the project’s operation schedule as per the April 2, 1980 agreement between the erstwhile States of Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and Andhra Pradesh. Any changes must involve consultation with these States,” the GRMB noted in its communication to the Central Water Commission (CWC).
The GRMB also highlighted that the diversion of Godavari water to the Krishna Basin must comply with tribunal awards, and excess water beyond 80 tmc ft at 75% dependability should be shared with Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. The DPR must include the cost of infrastructure for the new 3 lakh hectare ayacut (7,41,315 acres).
