In a move to promote electric mobility, the Central government has moved a proposal to exempt electric vehicles from registration fees.
The exemption will apply to all the categories of battery-operated or electric vehicles operating across India. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has initiated steps for providing differential registration fees under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) 1989.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed to amend Rule 81 of the CMVR in this regard, whereby electrical vehicles will be exempt from the payment of fees for issue or renewal of registration certificate and assignment of new registration mark.
The proposed exemption will apply to all categories of electronic vehicles, including scooters, motorbikes, autorickshaws and cars.
The ministry has issued a draft notification in this regard for comment from stakeholders before taking measures.
