Kakinada Lok Sabha MP Tangella Uday Srinivas announced that the central government has approved a Rs 323 crore project for constructing a protection wall along the Uppada coast, located in the Pithapuram assembly constituency.
Deputy Chief Minister K Pawan Kalyan, who represents this constituency, has also advocated for this initiative. "Completion of the wall will provide a permanent solution to prevent erosion of the Uppada coast," the MP asserted. For the past three decades, the Uppada coast has been eroding at an alarming rate of 1.23 mtrs. per year. In 2017–18 alone, around 26.3 mtrs. of coastal land merged into the sea. This severe erosion has disrupted the lives of fisherfolk in villages like Uppada, Nemam, Ameenabad, Subbampeta, and Komaragiri. Damage to coastal roads has also impacted traffic and local transport.
In response, the Andhra Pradesh Disaster Management Department, led by Udaya Srinivas, took up the issue with the Union Home Ministry. he Deputy CM also approached the National Disaster Management Authority. The National Centre for Coastal Research, Chennai, prepared the proposal, recommending a tetrapod-based wall. The proposal is scheduled for review by a sub-committee in New Delhi on June 30.
