The Gujarat government has decided
to trifurcate the Gujarat Electricity Board into separate entities for handling
generation, transmission and distribution.
Gujarat State Electricity
Corporation (GSECL) will handle power generation. According to Gujarat Energy
Minister, Mr Saurabh Patel, more such corporations will be set up in a bid to
encourage healthy competition in the sector.
Power transmission would be
entrusted to Gujarat State Electricity Transmission Corporation Ltd (GSETCL).
Sub-stations of GEB having capacity of up to 66 KV along with transmission
lines will be handed over to GSETCL, in the near future. Load despatch centres
will be turned over to GSETCL during the current fiscal.
For power distribution, four
subsidiaries of GEB will be set in north, south, west and central Gujarat. Each
of these entities would function as autonomous bodies.
It may be mentioned that GSECL and
GSETCL have already been incorporated, but have not yet started functioning.
The reorganization of the GEB has been made in accordance with provisions of
the Electricity Act, 2003.
