Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation (TNPDCL) will establish new substations and upgrade existing ones under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to ease overload issues.
There have been frequent power cuts and voltage fluctuations in key Chennai localities such as Broadway, Pudupet, Mylapore, T Nagar, Perambur, and in extended areas like Ambattur and Madhavaram. The Chennai and Kanchipuram regions will get 30 new 33/11kV substations, while 20 existing substations will receive additional transformers to boost capacity. Avadi, Tambaram, and other suburban areas will also benefit.
Statewide, TNPDCL will set up 133 new 33/11kV substations at a cost of Rs 1,320 crore and upgrade existing ones for Rs 189 crore, with total project funding of Rs 1,509 crore provided by REC. Currently, Tamil Nadu operates 789 such substations; the count will exceed 900 post-completion.
Overload-affected areas were prioritised for this turnkey project to ensure speedy implementation. TNPDCL officials confirmed tenders will be floated soon, with all city works targeted for completion within a year.
