Gujarat Pipavav Port has planned to develop a
modern container terminal at the Pipavav port.
The expansion plan will be undertaken in two
phases, the first of which was completed in December 2004 and the second is
slated for commissioning by end-2007. The total cost of the project, including
that of Phase I, is Rs.1,000 crore.
With the completion of Phase I, the terminal now
offers three quay cranes with 394 metres of quay length, 13.5 metres of draft
along side and container yards in excess of 1.7 lakh sq.m. A rail container
terminal measuring 30,000 sq.m. and having two rail lines has been developed
within the port limits.
In Phase II, work on which would begin in January
2005 itself, an additional container berth measuring 350 metres that will be
equipped with three quay cranes. The draft alongside the berths would be
increased to 15.5 metres which will enable handling of panamax vessels.
The container yard will also be expanded by
another 1 lakh sq.m. where 18 new gantry cranes will be deployed
