The Haider Canal sewage treatment plant (STP), near the 1090 intersection, became fully operational earlier this month after completing trial operations.
Now treating about 110 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage, it discharges treated water into the Gomti, Jal Nigam officials confirmed. Connected to the Haider Canal nullah carrying domestic sewage from surrounding residential areas, the STP processes wastewater through a multistage treatment before discharge. Monthly, it can handle roughly 3,300 MLD.
Around five percent of solid waste is removed during treatment, but garbage inflow, epecially after rainfall, often reduces capacity from the designed 118 MLD to about 110 MLD or less. Officials cite upstream drain cleaning and better waste management as crucial for consistent efficiency.
The STP’s commissioning is a milestone in Lucknow’s drive to clean the Gomti and strengthen wastewater infrastructure, with further improvements expected as inflow quality.
