To meet the growing drinking water demand in Greater Hyderabad, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) plans to draw additional water from Osmansagar by constructing a new parallel pipeline alongside the existing conduit.

The Board is currently preparing a detailed project report (DPR) for the initiative. Presently, water from Osmansagar flows to the Asif Nagar filter beds through an old conduit built during the Nizam’s era, which transports water without pumps. Over time, the ageing conduit has deteriorated, causing leakages and reducing effective supply. Although Osmansagar has the capacity to provide around 25 million gallons per day (MGD), only half of this reaches the city due to losses.

The new pipeline, once operational, is expected to enable water draw at full capacity, minimising wastage and strengthening Hyderabad’s drinking water infrastructure, ensuring reliable supply to meet the city’s increasing needs.
