On 06 February 2025, the Union Defence Ministry signed contracts worth Rs 10,147 crore to enhance the Indian Army’s Pinaka Multiple Rocket Launch Systems (MLRS).
The contracts, with Economic Explosives (EEL) and Munitions India (MIL), include the procurement of Area Denial Munition (ADM) Type-1 and High Explosive Pre-Fragmented (HEPF)-Mk-1 rockets. The ADM Type-1 is designed to deliver sub-munitions over large areas to target mechanised forces, vehicles, and personnel.
The advanced HEPF-Mk-1 rockets feature an enhanced range for deep strikes into enemy territory with precision and lethality. These upgrades will bolster the Army’s firepower by enabling "precise and long-range strikes." The Pinaka MLRS is capable of delivering a salvo of 72 rockets on a target up to 75 km in 44 seconds. The Army currently has four Pinaka regiments and six more are on order.
Additionally, a contract for upgrades in Shakti software has been signed with Bharat Electronics (BEL). These projects not only enhance national defense but also offer significant employment opportunities, particularly in the Indian MSME sector by encouraging components manufacturing.
