India's solar power generation capacity has surpassed the 70,000 MW mark as on 30 June, 2023.
Power and New & Renewable Energy Minister R K Singh has informed that of the total 70,096 MW capacity, Rajasthan has contributed 17,839 MW, followed by Gujarat which contributed 10,133 MW, Karnataka with 9,050 MW, and Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh contributing 6,892 MW, 4,870 MW, 4,695 MW and 4,552 MW respectively.
The contribution of Madhya Pradesh was 3,021 MW, while Uttar Pradesh contributed 2,526 MW of solar capacity. Chhattisgarh and Bihar accounted for 962 MW, and 203 MW of solar power capacity respectively.
The country has an estimated solar power potential of 7,48,990 MW. Hence, some of the schemes and programmes aimed at promotion of renewable energy, including solar power, in the country include permitting foreign direct investment (FDI) up to 100 percent under the automatic route and waiver of inter-state transmission system (ISTS) charges for inter-state sale of solar and wind power for projects to be commissioned by 30 June 2025.
Also included are the declaration of trajectory for Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) up to the year 2029-30, along with laying of new transmission lines and creating new sub-station capacity under the Green Energy Corridor Scheme and others to support the incremental capacity.
